Blood tests are normally recommended for assessing the benefit of treatment. In case the benefits are not as expected and the treatment regimen is proposed to be changed, a second test to estimate the number of HIV in the blood is recommended before changing the treatment.
If the treatment regime is to be changed, it is desirable that a complete new regimen is started. In case this is not possible, then at least two new medicines need to be added. It is not desirable to either change or add a single medicine to a treatment regimen that does not give the desired results.
In case the options for a new regimen are limited due to non-availability of medicines or side-effects or the need to take other medicines, it is desirable to continue the previous regime that has given partial results. If there is difficulty in tolerating one medicine, it may either be replaced with any other medicine or its dose be changed to a level that can be well tolerated.
